Episode 100: In which...

JESSICA GETS ALL A's.

For some, that may not be a big deal. For BYU students, you might understand the magnitude of it. For me, its a mountain moving event. I haven't gotten straight A's since before junior high and to get them at BYU just makes the whole deal huger. (Seriously, BYU likes to think it's Ivy League or something).

That was a worthy 100th post. :)

So yeah, would have been nicer had they been there BEFORE Christmas but I guess I'll take what I can get.

Speaking of Christmas, how was yours? Mine was awesome. Andrew and I just stayed here in Provo and did our own thing. It was fun. I can't say what my favorite Christmas gift was because I got so many good things. I got Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which is the bestest movie ever. I also got a backpack, jammies, pokemon slippers, a tripod, so many good things!

Oh! And Andrew got a backpacking stove! So now all we need is a water pump...but we can live for a good long while without one of those! No more renting! We are ready to go!

...it needs to be summer now.

And we had french toast for breakfast. ...4 hours after waking up because Andrew woke me up at 6. =P

Oh yeah, and I made stockings for Andrew and I. Funny story, since I didn't have a pattern and made my own, I kinda forgot to account for a loss of space once the stitches were in. We only stuffed them with clementine oranges because that is all that would fit! =P

Not too bad for hand-sewing though. They're completely lined too. Yay internet tutorials!

man...I was so not awake for Christmas morning

I've got my backpack and my tripod and I'm ready to go! (I'm also wearing pokemon slippers =P)

Episode 99: In Which A Lot of Food is Involved

Guess what! I've been married a year! It's great! I love it! :)

For our anniversary, Andrew and I did a 3 course fondue meal. We were gonna go to the Melting Pot but foolishly thought that it would be cheaper to do it ourselves. Well, lesson learned. It was the same price. But if we had done it as a group of 4-6 people it would have been much cheaper. Long story short, if we do it by ourselves again, we'll just go to the Melting Pot.

I won't go into much detail here but we'll just say it was amazing. We actually did the chocolate course last night because prep took so long that we didn't eat until 10 and we were full after the main course. We had an amazing cheddar fondue with cranberries and walnuts though and for the main course, we had chicken with an amazing island sauce to dip it in. Just trust me. It was amazing. Chocolate was called the "Flaming Turtle" because it was a chocolate caramel sauce with pecans that...you guessed it, we lit on fire.

I admit it, we chose that recipe purely so we could light it on fire. =P

But it was amazing. After the fruit ran out, we just ate it with spoons. =P

Monday, we had a combined family home evening with a couple of my old roommates and their husbands. I'm not gonna lie, it was fun but also slightly awkward. Mostly because I planned basically what to do...but as soon as everyone showed up my mind went blank and there was a lot of "so...thanks for coming...I guess we'll start?" going on. =P That and one of my friends said that her husband's shoes had broken because he "squats like an Asian" which wouldn't have been THAT awkward...if our other friend's husband wasn't Asian. =P

But who's counting right? =P

We decorated sugar cookies and I was pretty mad on Sunday when my sugar cookies didn't really turn out that well. But it turns out I'm not the only one who has problems with sugar cookies so I didn't feel so stupid. I don't think decorating sugar cookies at Christmas will be much of a tradition around the Powell house though.

Aside from that, there's not much else to say. I did finish all my finals...but I'm still waiting for grades. And I know you're still waiting for pictures of my art. Sorry, I'm still busy with Christmas stuff. I'm actually supposed to be sewing stockings right now. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and we don't have stockings!

Truth be told though, I'm scared to start the stockings. I've never sewn anything by hand before (don't have a sewing machine, or know anyone with one) and of COURSE I chose the LINED stocking pattern!

So I'm kinda putting it off =P

Here, you can enjoy some pictures. :)

Spark. Our favorite restaurant!!! :)

Ugly sweater contest at the Powell family christmas party. I swear, mine was a steal at $3.00 for the exact sweater worn by Professor Umbridge in the HP movies. =P There was also a used tissue in the pocket and Andrew insists and old lady died in that sweater. I couldn't get it off fast enough after that.

Temple square. It was COLD!!!
preparing the cheese fondue

cheese fondue

Chicken. That sauce was AMAZING. Sorry, no pictures of the chocolate course...I was too busy worrying about blowing up the house to take pictures.

I look insane in this picture, but it is a good one of Andrew :)

Episode 98: In Which Jessica Is Awesome

The results are in and it is official. I will be featured in the student art show! I was one of 13 students chosen (out of a class of 26). That probably doesn't seem like a big deal but it is. These things don't happen to me everyday.

So for all who are curious. This is the work that will be featured.

And if you're tilting your head to see it, no, I didn't forget to rotate it. Yes, it is a tree, but I was going for the abstracted image created by this orientation.

And that folks, is mostly it. Other than that I've just been scrambling to finish my drawing project all while making 7 liters of apple cider and about 80 molasses cookies. Oh. And working full time. But hey, gotta get the Christmas presents done before people skip town! (kaylynne, you were too fast. I'll have to give you something when you get home =P)

Episode 97: In Which Jessica Has An Announcement

I'm already married and nowhere near graduation so it's not that kind of announcement. It's not the kind of announcement that is 9 months in the making either.

I'd just like to announce that the semester is over! I have 3 more drawings to do my drawing class, 2 finals to take, and I am done.

I'm not worried about my finals...nor am I worried about the drawings. Ok maybe a LITTLE bit worried about the drawings but that's ok.

The REAL announcement I wanted to make though was that my work is going to be featured in the student art show. It is unclear at this moment which pieces or how many but I will most likely be in it. Each class has a limited space in the show so its not one of those "Everyone gets one piece in the show" kind of things. It's kind of a big deal for me.

When I know for sure all the details of how many pieces (my 2d teacher wants to feature 2 of my pieces if there is room!) I will let you all know. Also, I'm picking up my portfolios from school today and I'll be photographing all my work. If you wait patiently, I will be able to show you all what I've been working on this semester.

Until next time!

Episode 96: In Which Jessica Just Has Some Stuff To Say

I know I've said I was going to make this blog a food blog, and I guess I worried some of you. Let's be honest, I don't have the time to cook exciting things often enough for this blog to become entirely about food. Don't worry Adriana. I had intended to continue to post about the happenings here in my life...but every now and again attach it to a post about food as well. If that makes sense.

That said, the whole project is very much in its infant stages so we'll see if it ever grows up or if it suffers a tragic episode of SIDS.

Not much has happened here lately...or maybe nothing really compares to Christmas tree hunting. You may notice that I changed a few things on my blog. Hopefully you did NOT notice, because it was an accident and I couldn't get it back to normal. It does NOT make me happy. But let me know if the new font is too hard to read.

Anyhow, this week was quite relaxing for me. I didn't do nearly as much art as I should have, but it seems like it will be alright. We are FINALLY in the last week of school starting Monday and I cannot wait.

As for things that happened this week, Andrew did homework...I thought about doing homework. And we decorated the tree!

It's sooo pretty that every time I think about homework...I take pictures of the tree instead. =P

Speaking of the tree. I made this ornament for it. I found the idea on Pinterest of course. I basically took my wedding invitation and cut it into strips which I then put in the ornament. Once the strips are in the ornament, its a little hard to arrange them, but I still think it makes a wonderful ornament. It's like a snow globe, I always wanna shake it and rearrange everything. =P

What else? Not much. I did do 2 drawings on Friday and I don't want to brag but I am REALLY proud of them. Once school is out you can look forward to a picture filled post as I take pictures of everything I did this semester. I'm sure you want to know what came of all my screaming this past seventeen or so weeks. =P

All that remains is that I made cookies this afternoon. And that is my purpose in posting tonight...because this is a recipe that I've grown to LOVE. It makes amazing cookies and its really simple. Well, for me. It does call for browning the butter which is kind of a pain, but I personally like recipes that call for melted butter. That means that I can say "I want cookies" and make them right then and there because I don't have to wait for the butter to soften. Does anyone else feel annoyed when you have to wait for the butter to soften?

Anyhow, they are super chewy and delicious. :) I have this picture. It's not the most fantastic...but oh well.

Here's the recipe if you want it. If you try it, let me know what you think!

Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies (from Cook’s Illustrated May/June 2009)

1¾ cups (8¾ ounces) unbleached all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
14 tablespoons (1¾ sticks) unsalted butter
½ cup (3½ ounces) granulated sugar
¾ cup (5¼ ounces) packed dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon table salt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
1¼ cups semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
¾ cup chopped pecans or walnuts, toasted (optional)

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 375 degrees. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk flour and baking soda together in medium bowl; set aside.

2. Heat 10 tablespoons butter in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat until melted, about 2 minutes. Continue cooking, swirling pan constantly until butter is dark golden brown and has nutty aroma, 1 to 3 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and, using heatproof spatula, transfer browned butter to large heatproof bowl. Stir remaining 4 tablespoons butter into hot butter until completely melted.

3. Add both sugars, salt and vanilla to bowl with butter and whisk until fully incorporated. Add egg and yolk and whisk until mixture is smooth with no sugar lumps remaining, about 30 seconds. Let mixture stand for 3 minutes, then whish for 30 seconds. Repeat process of resting and whisking 2 more times until mixture is thick, smooth and shiny. Using rubber spatula or wooden spoon, stir in flour mixture until just combined, about 1 minute. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts (if using), giving dough final stir to ensure no flour pockets remain.

4. Divide dough into 16 portions, each about 3 tablespoons (or use a #24 cookie scoop). Arrange 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets, 8 dough balls per sheet.

5. Bake cookies 1 tray at a time until cookies are golden brown and still puffy, and edges have begun to set but centers are still soft, 10-14 minutes, rotating baking sheet halfway through baking. Transfer baking sheet to wire rack; cool cookies completely before serving.

One final note before I sign off...it was something funny that I came home to the other day. Andrew and I love chocolate covered raisins. The jar from Costco never lasts long in our house. One day, Andrew texted me and said he had saved the last of the raisins for me. I was touched. This is what I found when I got home.

Episode 95: In Which Thanksgiving Gives Way To Christmas

I'm gonna throw it out there right now, thanksgiving is one of my least favorite holidays. But I always look forward to it as the gateway to Christmas. (Plus, I get school off).

So this post will probably have little mention of Thanksgiving at all. In fact, all I want to say about it is that I made a pie. And...it was a good pie too. Did anyone else hear Mulan's voice when I said that?

We went to Andrew's aunt and uncle's house for Thanksgiving again this year and I made a pumpkin pie last year too. Last year though, I was recovering from surgery and so I think the pain and nausea caused me to accidentally double up on the ginger. (ha..I just realized ginger is good for nausea...my subconscious knows things). This year I was nervous about how it would come out but it came out beautifully. So beautifully that on Friday, Andrew requested that I make another one since the other one was gone. So Friday night, I made another pie.

Friday, we avoided as much black friday shopping as we could and slept in until 11am. We went to our favorite restaurant, Spark, and bought 25 dollar gift cards for 12.50 each. Score. The only black friday sale I've seen to date that was worth my time...and we didn't even have to get up early for it. =P

Saturday was the day I was looking forward to all week. It was the day we went to cut our Christmas tree!

Every year my family does it, but this was the first annual Powell family Christmas tree hunt! It was so fun! We took our friend Jared along because he's always fun to do things outdoors with. We met at his house and decided to take his truck. Good thing too...because there was so much snow!

There was snow everywhere! I was super happy just about that because we have not gotten ANY snow this year yet...nothing worth noting though. All the winter storms that have come through have stalled at the point of the mountain like they usually do. Provo is the lamest most sheltered place there is.

We hunted for about an hour before driving further up the road to try our luck there. We finally got to a spot that even Jared's truck couldn't get through so we got out to scout around. It didn't take long for me to find our tree, it was standing alone looking so perfect in its 15 foot glory. Yes, we cut down a 15 foot tree. Well maybe it was like 12 or 13. Anyhow, the bottom 3 feet were devoid of branches so we just cut that part off in the forest. Afterwards we had a hot lunch of pork and beans and hot apple cider then packed up to go home.

When we got home, we made a fresh cut in the tree (2 feet up because it was too tall for our house...but that is also tradition =P) We set it up in the house and it looks gorgeous. Andrew put the lights on it that night but we are still short 1 strand so we haven't started decorating it yet, but that will be remedied tonight.

Oh my goodness I am so happy to have a pretty live tree! It's a blessing as a college student to afford such a luxury, trees are so expensive these days that even normal people quite often can not afford a live tree these days! It makes our house smell WONDERFUL!!!

On our way to get our tree!

This adventure is no small production, we grabbed donuts for breakfast. Andrew was sure to get lots of maple ones for me! :)

Snowy road

Lots of snow everywhere!

Episode 94: In Which All Things Must Come To An End

This entry will (probably) be this blog's finale. I've been tossing back and forth over it and as fun as it would be to reach "Episode 100" it would seem that it is not in the cards.

I've been thinking hard about this blog lately and have decided to take it in a different direction. (I might keep posting til "episode 100" anyhow just for fun...but this is actually the 101st entry on the blog anyhow. =P)

I was talking to Andrew last night and I decided that this blog has deviated enough from its original purpose that I might as well end it. I have a new idea for this blog now.

Make your own cookbook

I found this on (of course) Pinterest and it greatly intrigued me. Andrew and I decided (and by that I mean I decided) that we should make a family cookbook.

I'm going to start using this blog to keep track of all the recipes that we make and how we feel about them so that we know what will make the final cut into the cookbook.

You can continue to stay tuned and cook along with us if you like. I think this will be a fun project and I'm looking forward to starting so I hope you enjoy it.
